2-stroke

Just returned from the 11’th annual Deals Gap 2-Stroke rally!

I just got in and I’m exhausted from a fantastic week of 2-stroking in the Carolina / Tennessee mountains around Deals Gap. Outstanding week of riding and fun. More to follow. Please stay tuned!

Reader Ride. Excellent Triumph Bonneville Scrambler

This is my kinda bike! Mike sent me these pics of his 06 Triumph Scrambler yesterday. He’s been taking his time on it and the results are great. I love the stance of it but he didn’t overlook the little things. Nice muscular looking ride.

He Writes:

On my bike, I’ve done the obligatory stuff – airbox butcher-job, D&D exhaust, carb jetting and Thruxton needles; I lowered the whole thing by about 3″, removed the fenders, bullet turn signals (truck stop specials on the front), Ducati (can I say Desmosedici?) moped headlight, aftermarket speedo, removed big plastic handlebar controls and replaced them with teensy momentary buttons…starter switch replaced with LSP kill switch, drilled holes here and there, #7 bend flat track bars, milled the goose neck in half and smoothed them down, Pit Posse pegs….probably some other stuff, too. I’m a slow worker, and I REALLY don’t expect you to list all of this crap, just more to let you know, I guess.

So, anyways, thanks again.
Mike

One of these days I have to get me one of these.

Thanks Again.  Hope you don’t mind but  I posted your build list cause I’m sure if I didn’t folks would be asking.

Simply Spectacular Suzuki GT550.

Thomas Leeming from Montana recently sent me this excellent Suzuki GT550 cafe racer / former racebike. I told him that I’ve always been a Yamaha RD400 and Kawasaki Triple fan but this Suzuki could definately sway me. Jush gorgeous.

Thomas Writes:
Thanks for the great web site. I recently completed this 1975 Suzuki GT550 cafe. Pipes by Omar’s. Electronic ignition. Battery, oil tank and electrics are hidden under the seat cowl. The older photo is from 1974 at Louden NH when I roadraced a GT550.

Thanks Very Much for the pics Thomas. Very Much Appreciated!

The same bike back in the day…

Reader Ride! Beautiful Montessa Scorpion brought back from the brink! With video!

Just a fantastic save of a really cool Montessa up in Massachusetts

Steve C. Writes:

Hello,
Great site/blog!  Have a couple of bikes you might like.
I found this Montesa on Craigslist in the Summer of 2006 – it’s a Scorpion 250, probably sold in 1968 or 1969.  Looked pretty rough in the pic the seller sent to me – see below – so my original thought was that I’d part it out on eBay.  I knew the front wheel alone was worth a few hundred bucks (more than I paid for the bike).  It’s a sought-after twin-leading shoe drum with air scoop that was also used on the Montesa Impala (street bike) and LaCross (real motocrosser).  But once I saw that the bike was nearly complete, I figured I’d see what it took to get running.  So  cleaned it up, painted the frame, straightened the front fender (yes, that’s it on the seat in the “before” pic), fabbed a seat strap, added a new chain, OEM rear brake pedal and shift lever, kickstart spring, rear brake light switch, taillight bracket, handlebars, points, condensor and plug.  That’s about it.  The rest was original — paint on tank, fender and headlight, grips, levers for the clutch, front brake and choke, even the footpeg rubbers, tires and that funky red leather thumb guard on the throttle.

Suzuki T500. Just got home from the Daytona Vintage races and this was literally the first pic I took.

What a fantastic day it was. This will probably be “Daytona” week (or so) around here so those of you who have sent in pics please don’t despair. I’m saving a lot of your material. Thanks and please keep em coming!

Oh OK a few more..

Crossover post from the 2-stroke blog. Race schedule notification and wicked little DT1 250 Flat Tracker Care of Don Miller and Metro Racing!

Don Miller from Metro Racing sends in this beauty that he’ll be campaigning at Daytona in a little more than a week.  You can see an earlier pic of the bike HERE from a previous post.

He Writes:

Hey Steve;
Haven’t had any 2 stroke stuff to send lately. Here’s something that may interest your readers.

My Sonic Weld, hard tail, Brakeless, DT1 250 Yamaha all ready for the new AMA Vintage Flat Track season opener at the Daytona Motor Speedways new short track on Feb 28th. If you are down there for bike week. Make sure you stop by! Seeing all these old flat trackers out on the track will be worth the trip. Racing starts at 11:00am on Sunday. Followed by an awesome amateur flat track program.

See you at the races,Don

Thanks again for the picture and for the heads up on those vintage Flat Track dates!  I’ll try and make it down for sure!

Garry McCoy’s Honda NSR500V form Mike "Stu" Stuhler.

We’re going for a double on this beauty! Another 2-stroke from the other board that’s to good to let slip.

Mike “Stu” Stuhler of the always excellent StuShots just dropped these awesome pics of Garry McCoy’s Honda NSR500V on me.

Mike Writes:

Hey Steve!

Here are some shots I took again over at Mid Ohio in ’07 of
Garry McCoy’s Honda NSR500V Big Twin as it was on display,
and on sale, in the paddock area.
As the links attached show, this was as it was in the trim
as he raced it in the Australian GP in late ’98 and 8 other
rounds that year per the 3rd link on his bio. From the
sign on the bike you can see they did spell his name wrong,
but I still would suspect that this is the real deal.
I have been wrong before, though! HA! I did find
a shot of the orig on Google search and it sure looks the
real deal! Nonetheless it is a sweet looking ride and I hope
you enjoy it!
This guy was such a pleasure to watch, and he always did
the best rolling spins in the corner and in the 500 era he
would just hammer them. It probably isn’t too hard to
find vids of him on YouTube with a little work!
Enjoy!

Mike
